Hong Kong’s container throughput has dropped back to the 1990s, but air cargo volume remains the first in the world!

According to the latest announcement from the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Bureau, Hong Kong Port will achieve a shipping container throughput of 14.401 million TEU in 2023, another year-on-year decrease of 13.7%, a new low since 1996. The throughput that year was 13.31 million TEU. This decline was also the largest decline since 2009, when the decline was 14.09%. The successive declines in Hong Kong’s maritime container throughput are in sharp contrast to the continued growth of mainland China’s ports.
